This course, ENG 305 Literature in Communities, is taught at UW Barron County taught by professor Joel Friederich. It is a service learning course which requires students to reach out to businesses and people within the community. Students are asked to locate any local businesses that may have information about possible authors to attend the festival as well as individual authors. Then, the students are given individual projects to work on in order to plan and organize the event. They were also asked to keep a blog of all of the work and research that went into the project.
In the second half of the course, students were asked to read, choose, and edit the poems and short stories that go into the school's literary book, Red Cedar, published each school year. All students read, voted, and debated on each and every poem and short story submitted.
